Fodera and Associates, LLC. received a call at 5:30 PM on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, from one of our associate firms, Right Direction Crisis Intervention, who provides services related to the safe and secure transportation of teens in crisis to a variety of residential programs across the country and around the world. Right Direction had received a call from a distraught set of parents, whose teen-aged daughter was enrolled in a residential treatment program on Long Island. Their daughter and another girl has fled the program some 20 hours before we received the call, and there was no information related to the direction of flight, or whereabouts of the two teens. We went immediately into action, putting resources from our partner on Long Island, JPenco Investigations, on the ground in the area where the girls had last been seen, coordinating with local law enforcement, and setting up a command center to facilitate the flow of information and coordinate internet, telecommunications and social media queries. We were able, with help from a number of resources, to develop intelligence indicating that the teens had purchased two cellular phones at a store in Hampton Bays, New York, some 50 miles east of the location where they were last seen. Utilizing our resources, and with the assistance of the Suffolk County Police Department, who had already put out a missing persons report on the teens, we were able to determine that the girls were most likely in the Hampton Bays area. We headed right out there and began to canvass the area where we believed the girls to be. After several hours of canvassing, with negative results, we headed over to the local Long Island Railroad Train Station in an effort to develop additional intelligence. We were unable to locate any video cameras which might be able to provide photographic evidence of the girls and any persons with whom they may be travelling. We decided to put our good, old-fashioned detective skills to work and started to interview taxi-cab drivers who were parked at the station. One driver was able to identify the girls from photos and provided an address at which he dropped off both girls the night before. We were now over 36 hours behind these two girls. We visited the address along with the Hampton Bays Police, and determined that they had checked out of the rental about an hour before. Additional intelligence led us to head back to the train station, as we had determined that the girls would be heading to New York City, where they were then planning to board a bus to West Virginia and then onto Ohio. Once we arrived back at the train station, we located both girls, taking them into our custody, working to mediate the issues between the teens and their parents, de-escalating the situation, and safeguarding them until their parents could make the necessary arrangements needed to facilitate their return home. Just another whirlwind weekend in the lives of our Investigative Team, and a very swift and satisfying result for these two girls and their families. We love what we do, and times like these remind us just how important our services can be to families in crisis. If you have a need for similar services, please call us as soon as you can. Time is of the essence in these situations and we strive to achieve a successful conclusion!
